The best red wines under $30 this winter!

I often get asked an interesting question:
"Angelica, what are the best red wines under $30?"...gosh, what a loaded question... obviously it all depends on your taste.
So, when someone asks me this, I revert to wines I know are 'everyone friendly'..as in, they aren't too weird or funky, they aren't too oaky, they aren't too spicey they aren't too juicy, they are just easy to drink for everyone and anyone. They are crowd pleasing red wines.

Painted Wolf "The Den" Pinotage - Paarl, South Africa $22. This award winning wine is my favourite "social wine"...it's to be enjoyed with friends and family. These wines are named for the den, the heart of all African wild dog communities. Flavour-packed, soft and juicy comfort wines for every day drinking. Medium bodied with a smorgasbord of bright red and black summer berries, savoury spice and toasty wood flavours, leading to a nicely poised finish. Pinotage is the best wine in the world to pair with Mexican dishes like fajitas or that glorious confection of chicken, chocolate, cumin seeds, smoky ancho chilies, pumpkin and sesame seeds – mole poblano. It is also very good with other flavoursome American regional specialties like Carolina pulled pork or smoky Texas B.B.Q beef rib.
Marrenon "Envie" Rouge (Syrah/Grenache) - Luberon, France $24.95. Plots cultivated according to the principles of Organic Agriculture. The method of vine management is of high quality: pruning in cordon de royat, careful trellising of the vines, the traditional way. The grapes are harvested at the end of long maturation periods, on the stump. The macerations take place at a low temperature to preserve the freshness and the aromatic nuances and over a long time to seek the structure and the density in mouth. Ruby colour. Aromatic nose with fresh red fruits. Delicate floral attack, notes of fresh fruit and a subtle hint of spice and licorice. The finish is fresh and gentle. Delish.

Sensi Collezione Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC $19.99. Our most loved Italian wine varietal. I still believe it's because it tastes similar to a soft Shiraz. It's also lighter in alcohol (13%) so I find a lot of people who suffer from drinking red wine can drink this without issue. I've lost count of the amount of emails I receive that say "Thanks Angelica! I haven't been able to drink Red Wine until now!" This is a good entry point to red wine and suits almost everyone's palate.
Kono Pinot Noir Marlborough, NZ $25. The grapes for this wine are sourced from our most stunning vineyards located in the upper South Island of New Zealand; with the majority sourced from our Awatere Valley vineyard in Marlborough. Grapes from a variety of Pinot Noir clones are cropped at low levels with a range of viticultural practices carried out to maximise quality - including shoot thinning, leaf plucking, crop thinning at veraison (green thinning) and quality control at harvest time. A deep ruby coloured in the glass, this wine displays lifted aromatic layers of cherry, plum and bright floral notes with subtle hints of wild herbs. The palate has layered flavours of ripe red and dark fruit, spice and integrated French oak underpinned by nuances of dry herbs and savoury characteristics. Mid-weight on the palate, this wine is balanced and mouth-filling with refined silky tannins that seamlessly lead to a long and elegant finish.

Sensi Negroamaro -Puglia, Italy $20. Negroamaro is a dark-skinned grape variety that has been associated with the Puglia region in southern Italy for at least 1500 years. Negroamaro is valued for its deep colour, medium-full tannins and dark berry fruit flavours. The variety can also add earthen tones. It is mildly aromatic and shows characteristics of ground brown spices such as clove, cinnamon and allspice. Amazing with Braised Beef, Lamb Rogan Josh or a simple spaghetti & meatballs! The ultimate Winter Food Wine.
Sensi "Campoluce" Organic Chianti $24.95. A little more full bodied than most Chianti's. Not only is this wine organic but it packs a punch with a burst of red fruit, a spicy note and still has the characteristic leathery, earthy style that Chianti is renowned for.

Andeluna 1300 Malbec- Tupongato Argentina $25. A wine that clearly breaks away from the rest of its kind, due to both, the intensity of its colours and the expressiveness of the ripe fruit that permeates its flavours. An exalted representative of the New World wines, it has an excellent quality/price ratio. Enjoy it's intense violet colour with aromas of red fruits, flowers and subtle toasty nuances . Fresh, soft and balanced on the palate. It's super expressive of the area its grown.
So there you have it...the best everyone-will-love-these red wines. Test them out for yourself and see how you go with your friends :)
