Burger and Wine pairing - how to do it right?

Is there anything better than a Friday afternoon beer, burger & chips.
Yes.
It's Wine and Burgers. I've recently questioned why we always bombarded with beer and burger advertising so I started trying some different burgers with different wines.
Here are some of my favourite burgers and wines to pair with them and why!....I encourage you to try it next time you are out to see if it works for you too!
Classic Hamburger
What is it? Simple. Normal white bun, grilled beef patty, a slice of tomato, onion lettuce and tomato ketchup
Wine to pair: Cannanou di Sardinia or Spanish Granache (or even a Sangria)
Why: You want to focus on something here that has a bitter sweet element like coca cola (the classic pairing with a hamburger).
Classic Cheeseburger
What is it? As above but with a slice of cheese
Wine to pair: Chianti or a Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon.
Why: Once you add the creaminess of the cheese, drink a highly tannic wine that cuts through the fat.
Grilled Chicken Bacon Burger
What is it? Brioche Bun, Grilled chicken breast, slice of crispy bacon, lettuce, tomato, barbeque sauce
Wine to pair: Italian Pinot Grigio or Chilean/New Zealand Pinot Noir
Why: Less fat means you want to drink a wine that isn't overly powerful. Lighter bodied but not necessarily delicate.
BBQ Beef & Bacon Burger
What is it? Brioche Bun, Grilled Angus Beef, Lettuce, Tomato, Beetroot, BBQ Sauce and a slice of juicy bacon (are you getting hungry yet?)
Wine to pair: SYRAH!
Why: The best wine to pair with anything BBQ is a French Syrah (or soft Australian Shiraz). I cannot emphasise that enough. What you find underneath these wines are generous dark fruits and spicy/savoury notes, Provençal herbs, smoked meat (Hello, bacon).
So, hopefully thats a fun experiment for you next time you feel like a burger to eat and want to pass on the beer and get your carbs from the bun instead!
